Dalit Women Make Political History in India

Sixty-two years after discrimination against Dalit populations was officially outlawed in India, more than 165 million Dalits continue to be victims of public humiliation, physical assault, custodial brutality, rape, kidnapping, dispossession of land and damaging of property. However, a handful of Dalit women have recently transcended their dual burdens of caste and gender to fill some of the country’s most prestigious political posts.
