Abused Women Now Eligible for Asylum in the US

The Obama administration recently overturned a ruling made by the Bush administration so that battered women can now receive asylum within the US, a country with extremely strict asylum criteria. Although this is a huge step toward global recognition that many women exist in extremely dangerous environments and should be protected, there continues to be stringint eligibility regulations for women seeking asylum.

The article claims that “In addition to meeting the existing strict conditions for being granted asylum, abused women need to show a judge that women are viewed as subordinate by their abuser, according to a court filing by the administration, and must also show that domestic abuse is widely tolerated in their country.” WCI recommends that the public follow this debate as the current US administration pushes for global women’s rights.
