Further Investigation of Sexual Violence in Conflict Zones

The Inter Press Service (IPS) recently released an article that discusses some explanations of sexual violence in conflict zones. The author explores issues such as sexual violence as a social problem, the need for innovative tools to evaluate the extent of sexual violence as well as the impact of sexual violence on the rebuilding and recovery process for communities and countries. The article specifically mentions Resolution 1820 passed by the U.N. Security Council one year ago, and the ways in which its progress is currently monitored. Anne-Marie Goetz, a chief advisor at the U.N. Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) describes 1820:

“For the very first time, the U.N. Security Council recognizes that systematic sexual violence can be a tactic of warfare. And because it’s a tactic of warfare, it requires a security and policy response,” said Goetz, speaking at the USIP on Thursday.”
