Sotomayor Becomes Third Woman in US History Nominated to the Supreme Court

Today, President Obama officially announced his nomination of Judge Sotomayor into the Supreme Court. This historic nomination makes Judge Sotomayor the first Hispanic justice, and the third woman on the nation’s highest court. President Obama and the Supreme Court believe that her participation and work in the court will ensure the continuation and development of the United States’ long standing belief in equal justice under the law.  Many are hopeful and enthusiastic that her presence will diversify opinions and represent a whole new cultural and social aspect of the country.

Judge Sotomayer is a daughter of Puerto Rican parents, who grew up in a Bronx public housing project. She will now become the United States’ 111th justice, replacing David H. Souter, and taking her seat as an inspirational and empowering example to women and the nation’s minorities.
