Senate Foreign Relations Committee Hearing on Global Hunger

On March 24, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee held a hearing entitled, “Alleviating Global Hunger: Challenges and Opportunities for U.S. Leadership.”  The panelists, including the chair, Senator John Kerry, described the dire situation facing almost a billion people in the world and emphasized that the global financial crisis and global warming are exacerbating global hunger.  Catherine Bertini, former executive director of the World Food Programme, referred specifically to women, saying that the majority of those living on less than $1 a day are rural women in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
