WCI at International Women’s Colloquium

WCI was honored to be able to attend and participate in the International Women’s Colloquium in Monrovia from March 7-9, 2009. WCI is happy to have witnessed history with the signing of the Monrovia Declaration and proud to have been able to put into action some of the thematic priorities of the Colloquium.

Discord likely over new push for US ratification of CEDAW

Sen. Barbara Boxer is planning a push to have the US ratify CEDAW, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. The US is one of only eight UN member states that has not ratified the Convention, which was passed in 1979.

“Women Are Heroes” Campaign

JR, an ex-graffiti artist, is collaborating with Doctors Without Borders to document the experience of women around the world. The project, Women Are Heroes, has featured women in Kenya, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Brazil.

WCI Featured Woman: Betty Gbean- Harris

In honor of all the grassroots women leaders WCI met during the International Women’s Colloquium in Monrovia earlier this month, we are featuring a community activist and aspiring “Iron Lady.” Betty Gbean-Harris is the current President of the Koyean Women’s Group and a WCI training participant from Liberia.

Senator John Kerry Speaks Out; New Report Shows Increasing Gender Pay Gap Worldwide

A report released on March 8, 2009 by the International Trade Union Confederation set the global pay gap at 22%, significantly higher than the previously estimated 16.5%. Senator John Kerry warns of the dangerous side effects that will most likely be the outcome of such gender discrimination.

Obama Establishes The White House Council on Women and Girls

On Wednesday, March 11, President Obama signed The White House Council on Women and Girls into existence. The council will be headed by Valerie Jarrett and will be comprised of the heads of all Cabinets.

Women’s Campaign International’s Trainings in the City of Women, Colombia

Through its partnership with the League of Internally Displaced Women and Congreso Visible, WCI has implemented a training series for displaced women in Colombia’s famed “City of Women.”
